March 11, 2012 Road Atlanta Miata Crash – NASA HPDE 2 group

This 2003 Miata Shinsen Edition was a brand new build by OPM Autosports in Cumming, GA. They installed cage, seat, Schroth 6 point harness, SPA AFFF 6 nozzle fire suppression system, radiator, brake lines, tow hooks and much more. They also oversaw the painting of the interior and hard top. Their workmanship is beyond reproach. It really was the coolest looking track Miata I had ever seen — which makes this story so sad (OPM also did ride height, corner weights and alignment for Spec Miata class and provided track side support for this NASA SE event). I was in HPDE 2 group (one step above beginners). I waited three months for the build to complete. I promised myself I would not wreck on the very first weekend I had the car back but … I did. I hit the inside wall after T3 pretty hard. Personally, I think I went to full throttle too soon at T3. If I had just waited a few tenths longer until the right rear tire had cleared the curbing before mashing the throttle, I think I would have been ok. It’s a painful lesson.

WATCH IN HIGH QUALITY! Natalie’s Third Run on Saturday of the Kansas City National Tour, autocross. Notice the stray cone, that was under the car from the previous run…
Early rubbing creates chaos at the drop of the green resulting in 6 car pile-up before reaching the flag stand.
Be sure to watch in High Quality! Spins from the 2008 Autocross Season from the team at CorvetteZ06.org. Music from Steve Ewing Common Side Effects

SCCA Spec Miata CCPS race start and crash (24May08)

Picking my way through a bit of mayhem at turn 1 at Carolina Motorsports Park (CMP). Looks to me that the white 1st-gen RX-7 (to camera’s left) tried to pull a late-braking hero move, clobbered the back of the orange Spec Miata, which in turn got into the back of the white 2nd gen RX-7. I ended up finishing 3rd in this race. (Spec Miata #25)

RX-7 dropping it like it’s hot. Not a funny video if you were the owner of the car. This is just proof of why you should make sure you have the right lug nuts before attempting to race.
Laguna Seca SCCA Spec Miata crash between turns 2 and 3.
