The Spec Miata Driver’s Point of View

I won a new Hero2 GoPro and thought it would be cool to try some new camera angles out. I have always wanted to do a helmet cam, I think the camera needs to be a little higher for next time. I did this off the chin part of the helmet.

SCCA SFR Spec Miata race at Thunderhill on April 1, 2012. I qualified 10th, and had a decent start. We played a bit with tire pressures and must have gone the wrong way, because the car was pretty loose. I was trail-braking deep into T11 to try and get a run on the 44 car into T14 when he brake-checked me a bit, and I got sideways trying to avoid him. Took to the grass and lost a bunch of spots. After that, the car didn’t seem quite as fast. About 15 minutes in, I started noticing a vibration. Not long after that, coming through T14, it got a lot worse. Going on to the front straight, the diff let go and put an end to the day.

Highlights from the SCCA Spec Miata race at Thunderhill on March 31, 2012. The rain made this an interesting race. I missed qualifying due to a problem getting through tech (expired belts) on qualifying day. Started at the back and worked my way about halfway through the field. Highlights: 3:00 Car has spun into the pit lane driver’s left 5:50 Car driving through the mud on the outside of T14/15 6:10 Another car slides through T14 9:35 The monsoon starts, everyone starts hydroplaning 9:53 I do a solo pirouette in T1

Two 2:08 Laps @ SCCA #8 Thunderhill Raceway 07/25/10 Spec Miata Qualifying Driving my Sealed Spec Miata (SSM) #80 Qualed P1 SSM; P2 overall Driver: Doug Makishima Sponsor: REC Solar / Competition Autowerks Highlights: – Two 2:08.6ish qual laps (.553 by AMB timing) – Both are fast laps, but are far from perfect. Will be gunning for the 2:07’s next time! – Times are close to my SSM track record lap time of 2:08.243 set on 4/10/10. (I didn’t have my GoProHD turned on so no video – DOH!) Update 9/27/10: Last weekend I set a new SSM track record at a 2:07.57. My GoPro ran out of storage space on the SD card – Doh! So, I don’t have the lap on video. FWIW, shifting to 5th down the front straight as shown in these two laps is not the way to go despite what torque curves might suggest. It turns out that too much time is lost going from 4th to 5th and back to 4th, plus the more difficult timing of the braking plus 4-5th shift causes inconsistencies.

My short race. I was having a good race with Cliff in the white car in front of me. My tires got a bit too hot and slippery. I was contemplating dialing it back to try and let the tires cool and then…. spin! Screwed up the front end pretty good. :-(

A quick-ish lap, a couple passes… fun times. Could still do it faster though. The car is prepared by Ed Railton and sponsored by Premier Auto Service. Cam is a Contour HD, shot in 720p.

Highlights from my first Spec Miata race after completing SCCA driver school. Mostly just me having a great time at the back of the field, trying to keep it clean and finish the race. Had clutch problems in the first race and in qualifying for the second race. Event: SFR SCCA Regional at Thunderhill Raceway, group 7 (Spec Miata), race 2, April 2011. Qualified 35th and finished 32nd out of 42 cars.
