My short race. I was having a good race with Cliff in the white car in front of me. My tires got a bit too hot and slippery. I was contemplating dialing it back to try and let the tires cool and then…. spin! Screwed up the front end pretty good.

Full race, including pace laps, at the Virginia International Raceway North Course. (There’s a motorcycle race on the South Course that you can see partway through the race.) This is an 45 minute “endurance race” with a mandatory 2 minute pit stop. Qualified badly, started mid-pack. Had a good scrap with my teammate, Henry Payne, in the red #22 Spec Miata. Was catching traffic when my clutch failed about 20 minutes into the race — sounds like a snowmobile CVT transmission! (I say “tranny” in the video, but it’s definitely clutch.) Pulled into the pits early to serve my pit stop and let the clutch cool down. Wasn’t much better after the pit stop, but I learned to be gentle on the throttle and match the revs on shifts to minimize the clutch slippage. I actually pull off some passes! No idea where I finished, near the bottom for sure. But now I know how to race a car with a slipping clutch!

This is the full race, from just before the “1 minute whistle” on the grid, including pace laps. Click here www.youtube.com if you want to skip to the start. This was my first race on this track, first race on a high-banked track ever, which was quite an experience. I qualified 6th, had a good battle with red #92 Spec Miata before he dropped out due to mechanical difficulty, and made a few mistakes near the end. I won’t spoil the finish, but places 1 – 4 were separated by maybe 2 seconds.

VIR Full Course — SCCA Spec Miata — Race Start + 2 laps — 28-Oct-2008 VIR is my favorite track. I’m qualified 6th. I’m a lousy qualifier — need someone to chase! Had a great race, but went off-track on the last lap battling for 2nd. Ended up finishing 5th. Car is a ‘92 Spec Miata 1.6L, still has glass in the doors, head-lights, heater, a crate motor, a trailer hitch for pulling a tire trailer, and a current license plate!

This is my second Spec Miata Race. I started in last place (23rd) after a DNF on Saturday. I finished 7th after passing 16 cars. You will see hand signals between myself and other drivers showing how we work together to catch up to the next group of cars. I can’t think of a better way to practice race craft. Thanks to Rush Motorsports for a very capable car.

This was my first Spec Miata race. I started 5th and got a great start but lost several positions when the leader I was bump drafting forgot to shift to 5th gear. I managed to make my way back to 3rd place but I flat spotted the tire in the process. This ultimately lead to the flat tire that ended my race. Watch how the lead drivers hook-up together to run away on the banking.
