I won a new Hero2 GoPro and thought it would be cool to try some new camera angles out. I have always wanted to do a helmet cam, I think the camera needs to be a little higher for next time. I did this off the chin part of the helmet.

SCCA Group 17 Spec Miata race on September 4th, 2011 @ Infineon Raceway. This was the second Spec Miata race of the weekend. On board with car #20: Andrew Holifield. My 3rd and final race of the weekend. This one was a total blast: much smoother & controlled all around the track. I had my line pretty much nailed down and cruised through the back of the field. The start was a bit fast (and stretched out) I was in the back of the pack and expected to get way slowed down into T-11 (like the other races) but instead pretty much started my race in T-7.

My first Spec Miata race win. They inverted the top 10 after qualifying placing me 6th on the grid for the race. Great racing with Kyle Loustaunau and Phillip Holifield. Almost threw it away being defensive…..

Some contact was made between Matt Schultz and I as I was passing for the lead. I was then shuffled back in the pack as I went out into the grass. Live and learn; scrub those tires after an off-track excursion! We managed to still sneak out a third place result in the race and I went onto finishing second the following day. Full race, including pace laps, at the Virginia International Raceway North Course. (There’s a motorcycle race on the South Course that you can see partway through the race.) This is an 45 minute “endurance race” with a mandatory 2 minute pit stop. Qualified badly, started mid-pack. Had a good scrap with my teammate, Henry Payne, in the red #22 Spec Miata. Was catching traffic when my clutch failed about 20 minutes into the race — sounds like a snowmobile CVT transmission! (I say “tranny” in the video, but it’s definitely clutch.) Pulled into the pits early to serve my pit stop and let the clutch cool down. Wasn’t much better after the pit stop, but I learned to be gentle on the throttle and match the revs on shifts to minimize the clutch slippage. I actually pull off some passes! No idea where I finished, near the bottom for sure. But now I know how to race a car with a slipping clutch!
