VIR Full Course — SCCA Spec Miata — Race Start + 2 laps — 28-Oct-2008 VIR is my favorite track. I’m qualified 6th. I’m a lousy qualifier — need someone to chase! Had a great race, but went off-track on the last lap battling for 2nd. Ended up finishing 5th. Car is a ‘92 Spec Miata 1.6L, still has glass in the doors, head-lights, heater, a crate motor, a trailer hitch for pulling a tire trailer, and a current license plate!

My 2nd trackday with my Spec Miata racecar and 3rd ever trackday. This is one of the first sessions in the morning and it was wet. I was just having some fun sliding the car around taking the slick racing lines in the wet since there was way too much traffic to bang of some fast consistent laps. 3:38, 4:50 and 6:25 has a bit of action. The MR2 I passed around 3:45 crashed out on the next session on that exact same spot (theres a bit of a bump and surface change on the exit of turn 9 onto the front straight if you keep it tight on exit)

Second session learning the track on old tires in Practice before the SCCA National weekend at Portland International Raceway. When you have very minimal seat time before an event, find the limits quickly where it is safe. This definitely isn’t a 4th gear corner! We were running without the chicane this weekend, 118mph (no draft) entry into the braking zone, not bad for a little Spec Miata. May 6-8/2011 www.brodygoble.com

Full of mistakes – too excited to run with the big boys at the front. This is our first National SCCA race, and third race ever in a car. Finished 5th/14 in Spec Miata, and 4th the previous day from a run from last place (didn’t qualify). Tons to learn from for the next one at Miller Motorsports Park in August/11!

A stretched connecting rod in the engine during practice meant the car needed to be taken back to Premier Auto Service by owner Ed Railton, who then worked through the night in order to rebuild the engine and make it ready to race. That meant I missed qualifying and had to start in the back for Regional #5. There were about 60 cars in the race. I’m not sure how many I passed. My coach, Ric McCormick, was on the radio spotting for me. Then the 08 car missed a shift. My car has street exhaust so it’s quieter than most of the other cars. When the 08 missed his shift I thought it was mine. I looked down, saw that things were fine, and when I looked up I was on a collision course with the 08. I jinked to the outside, because the right side was filled with cars (the 08 and the 10). The 08 didn’t see me, and when he looked up from correcting his gearbox, he saw the 10 to his inside. He must have reacted by steering to the outside slightly, which was enough to punt both him and I to the outside. The first hit was very light, and it only put some tire donuts on the door. But as we spun and I came to a rest, his car hit mine in the right rear, which bent a couple suspension components. The car didn’t track straight after that and could not corner very well, so I had to retire. Fortunately the fix was fairly simple (compared to rebuilding an engine) and I was ready for qualifying in the …

Geri Amani’s Unfortunate Crash at Infineon Raceway. Reminders to all who race: NEVER skimp on safety equipment!! This is footage from a regional photographer who happened to be video recording this race. Captures the last segment after being hit by a high power Camaro–a mid-air spin and tumble to the ground. Geri walked away with only a few bruises and one hell of a story.
