Volcanos: Car Care After Ash Fallout

by Eric Vanderham

The expenses involved in keeping our vehicles running after a volcano ash fallout can be astronomical. Vehicles are often essential equipment in our mobility, and therefore using precautions in maintaining their mechanical soundness will be crucial in having transportation. Just scratching our windows if we don’t keep wiping the blades with water is one of the many concerns. This is a good time to be a mechanic or mechanically inclined.

-use a cloth and water to frequently wipe down the blades in order to avoid scratching the windshield.

-The alternator will need to be cleaned with compressed air at the garage, every 500 miles or so for a few months, depending on the severity of the ash fallout and dust spreading.

-Wheel brake area will need to be cleaned every 50 to 100 miles during dire road conditions from ash fallout, again with compressed air.

-Have the air filter in the vehicle cleaned. You can also help clean it by blowing air from the inside out. Talk to a mechanic about cleaning it effectively however. And if you don’t have an air filter, you shouldn’t be driving the car.

-One of the more costly expenses due to the frequency needed, will be changing the oil and oil filters. This means you may need to change them every 50 to 100 miles, or every 400 depending on the severity of ash fallout. You do not want the engine ruined.

Stock up on water and cloths for the car, as you will need these to keep the windshield area and wipers cleaned.

-As with anyone involved in this type of cleanup, filter masks, respirators, goggles, and hats or another type of head cover will be not only helpful, but for most of those items, crucial in keeping your health.

Don’t travel unless absolutely necessary. Every department in towns and cities will be dealing with the same transportation issues but on a larger scale. Services will not be available or not available with the speed and efficiency you are accustomed to, so response times for police, ambulance, coast guard, military utilities and other government offices will be very slow or non-existent for a while so patience and innovative alternatives may be necessary.

Safer Vehicles

by Jeff Cline

Ever since 1985 the car has been a popular means of transportation. Both convenient and comfortable. Since the first car, they have come a very long ways, in the way of dependability, comfort and safety. Almost every American household has at least one vehicle.

Today are cars are equipped with many safety features to keep us safer on the roads. The roads today have many hazards, due to the many automobiles on the roads. It is a good idea to become familiar with the safety features available to consumers.

Air bags are one of the best inventions since sliced bread. Many lives are saved each year from the use of air bags in a crash. Your car may have frontal airbags or both frontal and side. Either way they are triggered to inflate using a harmless gas upon impact of a moderate to severe nature.

Air bags can be found in a few different places in the car depending on the make and model of the car. For the most part frontal airbags are found in the steering wheel and the dash of the car. Side air bags can be in the door, on the seats or overhead, near the door.

Air bags do save lived most of the time, but there are some things you need you know. You should never sit too close to an airbag. Air bags inflate with enough force that if you are close to it they could inflict major injuries or even be fatal.

Another safety feature that is being used these days is rollover prevention. There are a few different preventive measures being taken by car makers. One is they are building the cars engineered for ride-height ratios. Some have started implementing rollover air bags to help cushion your body. Some use electronic stabilization control.

Tires can make a good road trip go bad in a hurry. Make sure to check condition and pressure of your tires once a month and before long road trips. Never over load you tires beyond the manufactures recommended weight. Never over inflate tires.

Every year there are testings and safety ratings given to new automobiles. If you are looking for a safe car for your family it is wise to pay special attention to these ratings. Try to buy the safest car your money can afford.

Filtering your Internet

by Sam Garnebo

Use advanced filters:

The internet is the world’s largest source of information. Some of the material the internet contains is very useful, but a large portion is offensive and inappropriate for viewing. Because this material can be grouped into various categories, sometimes it takes an internet filter that utilizes different techniques to effectively filter out objectionable content.

What is an Internet Filter?

An internet filter is simply a software program that prevents certain internet users from viewing objectionable material online. Most of this type of software blocks out content by using one or two methods: filtering based on a predefined list of keywords considered inappropriate or offensive, and filtering based on URLs or websites that contain inappropriate content.

As stated ealier these two methods are among the more common way of protecting your family, but they are not at all the only ones. Taking the time to review this article will allow you to broaden your understanding of the new echniques filters have and how they can assisst you.

Dynamic Categorization

Dynamic categorization picks up where a keyword filter fails. Algorithms are used to determine the appropriateness of material presented on web sites. It is better than a keyword filter because it not only blocks more, but it also allows access into more sites that are harmless which are normally blocked because they possess questionable words.

Image Recognition

A very advanced filter is called the image recognition filter. It has the ability to block unwanted images that contain pornography. The problem is that it is complex and it takes too much time to work for which people do not have the time causing it to be missing from most computers.

Newsgroup Filtering

Just because newsgroups are as old as the internet does not mean they are harmless. Many are unmoderated and so they contain a lot of unacceptable content. There are conversational groups that include sexually explicit language, visual groups that frequently post sexually related images, and extremist groups that are known for promoting racism and hatred.

If restrictions are not in place children could happen upon them and view these messages and r-rated pictures or even download them. A lot of the better filters will allow you to restrict access to all or specific newsgroups.

Program control

Advanced filters can also offer the ability to specify what programs are allowed access to the internet. This capability resembles the basic structure of a two-wall firewall. For example, peer-to-peer applications like Kazaa or limewire can be blocked from accessing the web, yet allow access to your mail client is done by configuring the filter to your desires.

Such a filter also makes it possible to limit certain users to a select few programs that require access to the internet.

Advanced Features for Enhanced Protection

The internet’s helpful information has given new windows for which potential dangers can sneek through. Because of the awareness of this threat, many companies have been created to offer protection to many situations by designing special internet filters. Thankfully we can and need to possess such programs that allow us to monitor and keep porn off of our families computers.

Children are at risk. From online predators to life long addiction to pornography, the ways and means are endless.

The pornography industry is not going away anytime soon. This industry can produce more income than the big three in Detroit. That was before the “recession”.

Wolves in sheeps clothing run rampent on the internet, so parents need to protect their children from meeting up with any of them or giving out personal information. Parent need to know who their children know, even on the internet.

Social sites that encourage meeting with others should be monitored closely. Your Childs profile should be set to private, and as the parent needs to have the control over who is friends who is not.

The Growing Problems of Internet Porn

by Sam Garnebo

Because adult entertainment is equal to big business, there are porn sites opening everyday bring the total into the millions. Watching x-rated material on the internet is cheap, fast, and anonymous, which makes has made it so widespread.

There are many premium porn sites, and many more that are absolutely free. When considering the number of people who unintentionally bump into this content, it’s clear to see that online porn remains a pressing issue.

From Past to Present: Prevalence of Porn

Porn was hard to get at the beginning ot the web, unfortunetly however, today it could never be easier. By simply typing in your request and waiting adult web sites will flood to your screen.

Even if you’re not looking for porn, it will sometimes come to you via e-mail or advertisement. This is a huge problem to those who have no desire of the filth or who have kids that use the internet.

Linking Porn with Pedophiles

Along with internet porn comes much worse, pedophiles. Predators use the net to pose themselves as other kids just looking to meet new freinds.

Pedophiles will go as far as to solicite and send pictures of themselves to children.

Out of children the ages of 10-17, 1in5 were sexually solicited while 1in4 were exposed to naked people or people engaged in sexual activity, according to the Nation Center for Missing and Exploited Children.

This search proves the need for families to have internet filtering software.

How Internet Filters Block Out Porn

There are many filters available but most have the same techniques. Below are two of the most common:

* Keyword filtering: This strategy allows you to restrict access to websites that contain vulgar words or phrases. Most programs provide the ability to make adjustments at any given time at your own discretion. A reliable filter will include a predefined list of keywords and allow you to create your own as well.

* URL filtering: The URL filtering features lets you restrict access to individual sites based on their website or URL address. This type of program usually comes blocking thousands of websites that boast pornography and other offensive content.

Internet Filtering is a Must

It is suggested that parents get educated of the internet dangers how to keep their families safe. Parents need filters to monitor online activities and block porn. Due to the questionable content that floods the web a filtering program needs to be in the software package of all home-based computers.

Baby safety monitors are one of the top safety devices used by parents in the home. While every parent of a toddler or baby should have one of these important communication devices, there are many different types of monitor available.

Every baby safety monitor will come with different features; they have come a long way from the older baby monitors in use in the 70s and 80s. If you have used one of these older baby safety monitors, then you know how prone they were to interference from household appliances as well as other baby monitors which were in use nearby. This is no longer the case, with today’s bay monitors having largely solved this problem and many models even offer advanced functionality such as video.

All baby monitors do use radio signals to allow you to hear what’s going on in the nursery. While this is what makes baby monitors effective, these signals can be listened in on by people in the area. Many baby safety monitors essentially operate as electronic bugs! These devices are in use by thousands of households all over the world.

Criminals can listen in on baby safety monitors and learn your routine, finding out when the ideal time to break into your home is.

A cheap radio scanner and some headphones are all that is needed to listen in on a home which has a baby safety monitor. Intruders can listen in to find out when you will not be at home and can therefore easily enter your home. Not an ideal security situation, to be sure.

Burglary is a risk that we all face and being the victim of this crime can leave you feeling helpless and violated. Burglars have it pretty easy when there are unsecured electronic communications devices like cordless phones and baby monitors in use in a home. They case homes, watching for the comings and goings of the occupants and may also listen in on baby monitors and phone conversations. Once they have found an easy target, they will strike.

At my company, we have a radio scanner which is used to monitor the dispatchers. While setting it to the proper frequency, I found that I was able to listen in on neighboring homes’ cordless phones and baby monitors!

I had learned things I never intended to know in the course of setting up this radio scanner; things that if I were a burglar, would prove to be very valuable information indeed.

With older and newer models of baby safety monitor, there is a risk of being eavesdropped on. Even at a distance of a few blocks, people are able to listen in on what’s going on near your baby monitor; but not using a baby monitor at all is not really an option, so what’s the best course of action for concerned parents? You should keep in mind that you may not really be alone – so don’t discuss anything which may be helpful to criminals within range of your baby monitor and don’t forget to turn it off when you are not using it.

Thankfully, there are now new safety technologies which allow users to scramble the signals from their baby monitors. There are digital baby monitors which provide a clear signal between monitor and receiver, but are extremely difficult if not impossible for outside parties to listen in – this allows parents peace of mind while preserving their privacy and security.

Due to the fact that so many people today rely on the internet for their business or other personal communication, the internet is a very big part of our society. To all positives there are negatives, the internet being no different has a dark side.

Online Scams

Scams on the internet are as common as the hundreds of unsolicited messages people get in their e-mail daily. These messages have actually been where many scams originate and claim their victims. Over the last four years, the number that have been deceived by these scams has been on the rise, 2005 showed $13 million were lost by US citizens to online scams. Durring hard times it seems even more people are scammed.

These plots range from ridiculously obvious to well devised, sophisticated techniques that are nearly impossible to detect. With big name internet entities such as eBay and PayPal being exploited, thousands of victims have been fooled easily and learned very hard lessons.

Computer Infections

One of the biggest threats plaguing the internet today is all the contagious infections floating around in cyberspace. Anyone who accesses the internet, particularly PC users, needs to be very cautious when surfing the web or even opening email.

Unsolicited email sent by spammers is notoriously known for coming attached with malicious software, be it a virus, Trojan or worm. Once you open the attachment, your system becomes compromised and might spread the infection along to people in your contact list.

Programs known as adwares are even more potentially hazardious, because they can send you waves of advertisements that you don’t want as well as spyware that can actually monitor your online actions and record your valuable information. Some viruses may only cause your computer to run slowly while other have the power to completely destroy every file you have and turn your computer into a paper weight.

Social Media Sites

There is yet another negative to the internet and it may not appear to be as danger as it can be at its worst. Online communities like MySpace are looked at as nothing more than fun and games, however, where evil can get in it does. There are so many people who will enjoy these sites and post stupid pictures of themselves or even personal information and not know the danger they have just placed themselves in.

If you question what is said then take a look at any MySpace profile, which will allow reveal that so many people will reveal all kind of personal data along with photos. What appears to be just fun should be, but it’s not. Web sites such as this have been at the center of many offline crimes that result in arrest and in some cases murder.

Practice Safe Internet Computing

The internet like any city in America cannot be completley cleaned out, but you can personally protect yourself. Filters can be installed so that kids can surf safe and you the parent can rest easy that they won’t happen upon unwanted content. There are also anti-virus software that are available that will protect you from many unknown online threats.

Internet users have to understand that they should never open unsolicited email or give out their personal information to someone online. If you install a good security software and practice safe computing you will greatly limit your risk of being a victim to the world wide web.
