My 1992 Volvo 240 wagon bendin’ and swayin’ on the autocross track. This is the first event of the 2007 season for South Jersey Region SCCA. So much more fun in this than somethin built for the track

Grocery-getter racing is gay.

considering the weight of these they handle great. no question

The real “Green Brick” is a ‘69 Valiant- clocked @167, uphill, on the back stretch of Watkins Glen. Owned by a guy in New York named Rick Ehrenberg. It is one badass granny-mobile and cockroach tough. Like a well-built Volvo!

Makes me miss my ‘88 244GL. Damn that thing handled like a tank, went through almost anything, and was easy as hell to fix until she got t-boned and totaled out.

Actually the 240 I have has alot more power I forgot to mention that its a turbo car.
But I know what you mean and you’re right about that.

So you’re saying your 760 understeered then. That is mostly likely because it is rear-wheel drive with the extra power of the turbo, which the 240 doesn’t have. When both cars are actually gripping the road, the 740/760/940 handle a lot better. They don’t lean as much in turns and in my opinion feel much more stable because of the wider track.

I can say the exact opposite in my experience
I had both the 760 turbo 87′ and volvo 240 both estate wagons and the 240 had much better handling than the 760, because the 760 always pushed the front wheels forward.

My ‘85 240DL sedan had a pretty stiff ride, but naturally because of it’s tall, narrow body and even narrower wheelbase, it’s going to feel top-heavy and not handle well. I hated driving it around town making 90 degree turns from one street to another because it felt so top-heavy and unstable. On windy country back roads going 45+, I could feel it sliding a bit, making it feel unstable. I spent a lot of time driving my Mom’s ‘89 740 Turbo wagon and ‘95 940 sedan. They handle MUCH better.

Why do you say it handles crappy? I can take most turns 15-20 MPH faster in my 91 SE Wagon(High tread wear tires), than I can with my 92′ Supra(Azenis for tires). Its kind of embarrassing actually. The wagon rolls all over the place and lifts wheels like it is its job, but it stays planted.

Autocrossing a 240 wagon? Hahaha, what fun! That’s like watching fat cops run after people. Funny and sad at the same time. Makes me miss the crappy handing of my ‘85 240DL.

boy that puts my old dl wagon to shame, love it! thanks for posting!
turbodreams101 | January 7, 2010 at 1:07 am
I would definetly anti-sway bar it, along with Tein lowering springs and good shocks and struts. You want to go real stiff but not too much so… too much and you’ll roll it unless you break loose the rear tires and power-slide it! Also, to back up the suspension, a 2.3 turbo swap from the 242 GT turbo is a good choice.

I have a 244 i just put on iPd springs and a set of Bilsteins and that makes a massive difference. If you have like $800 to spare id say do it. Beyond that check out stuff like anti-sway bars and chasis braces.
Nice car man, good to see people that love their Volvos!

Hi, what did you do to the brick to get her to handle so well? I have a 1991 light blue brick wagon and would love to enter her into a ralley. She’s in really nice shape but all original equipment and an auto tranny. Do you have a stick or auto?
Any suggestions how to enter? I am in the greater Tri State NY area so could drive to NJ to compete. Thanks for any advise.

were at in sj was this

people underestimate the Volvos… i’ve autocrossed my moms 1993 Volvo 240GL Wagon, and i’ve beaten cars people adore as sportscars, like Skyline and Supra.
If YouTube allowed links, i could have linked to the laptimes to show what Volvo’s can do, there are other Volvos faster than me again too, i’m not a great driver, it’s more common to use them here in Europe.
